While the Board on Urban Environment will not have a dedicated symposium in 2025 due to ICUC12 happening on the same year, we are considering several session topics that can represent our research at AMS 2025. We also encourage the community to consider topics that are of interest.

If you plan to submit a session topic, kindly inform us to coordinate efforts and prevent scheduling conflicts.

The Board on Urban Environment (BUE) at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is currently seeking nominations for new board members to join our dynamic team. This is an exciting opportunity to actively contribute to the development of our society and shape the future of urban climate research.

We currently have two full member positions and one student member position available for a 2-year term. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about urban climate issues and who represent the diversity of our membership. Whether you are an established researcher or a young scholar, we welcome your nomination.

We are very pleased to announce that ICUC 12 will take place in Rotterdam, NL – congratulations to Gert-Jan Steeneveld and the entire Rotterdam team! This means that after 10 years and fantastic events in America and Australia the conference will come back to Europe.

Furthermore, we want to congratulate the remaining finalists on their good results. We can obviously only have one conference, but the membership poll received a very good turnout in comparison to previous ones. This is a strong indication of both, an active community, and the quality of all three bids.

We thank all candidates for their effort and the fantastic concepts, which made it difficult but also very worthy for the board and members to select at the various stages of the process. Now we are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Rotterdam in 2025!

CL2.5: Urban climate, urban biometeorology, and science tools for cities

Urban areas play a fundamental role in local- to large-scale planetary processes, via modification of heat, moisture, and chemical budgets. With urbanisation continuing globally it is essential to recognize the consequences of converting natural landscapes into the built environment. Given the capabilities of cities to serve as first responders to global change, considerable efforts are currently dedicated across many cities to monitoring and understanding urban atmospheric dynamics. Further, various adaptation and mitigation strategies aimed to offset impacts of rapidly expanding urban environments and influences of large-scale greenhouse gas emissions are developed, implemented, and evaluated.

This session solicits submissions from the observational, modelling, and science-based tool development communities. Submissions are welcome that cover urban atmospheric and landscape dynamics, urban-climate conditions under global to regional climate change, processes and impacts due to urban-induced climate change, the efficacy of various strategies to reduce such impacts, and human-biometeorological investigations in urban settings. We also welcome techniques highlighting how cities use novel science data products and tools, including those from humanities and social sciences, that facilitate planning and policies on urban adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of climate change. Emerging topics such as citizen science, crowdsourcing, machine learning, and urban-climate informatics are highly encouraged.
